Britons have been urged by travel industry association ABTA to buy local and travel sustainably when they go on holiday.

A new survey from the organisation, conducted along with the Travel Foundation, revealed that 80 per cent of holidaymakers make an effort to buy food from local cafes and restaurants when travelling.

The poll also found that a similar proportion of tourists enjoy exploring the local area when they are on holiday.

However, three-quarters of respondents do not consider whether the accommodation they are staying in is sustainable.

Nikki White, head of destinations and sustainability at ABTA, said: ‘The quality of our holidays relies on beautiful, well-cared for environments and a warm welcome from the local community, so caring for destinations is vital.’

‘Make Holidays Greener Week [which runs from July 2 until 9] highlights how there are simple things we can all do to make a difference,’ she added.
