I’ve been on a bee binge lately and was happy to learn that O’Hare International Airport is the first airport in the U.S. to have an on-airport apiary.

The 23 beehives, home to about 1.5 million bees, have been on O’Hare property since May 2011 and are tended to by ex-offenders and low income residents learning new skills as part of a program operated by North Lawndale Employment Network.

According to the airport, each hive is expected to produce up to 25 pounds of honey per year and that honey will be harvested and marketed, perhaps at the airport, as part of the Beeline product line of honey and skin care products.

Not so sure you’d want to eat honey produced at an airport? The fol

Coolers are useful and convenient on long road trips or camping trips, but the ice eventually melts in standard coolers. This can be avoided with a thermoelectric cooler, which can be plugged in to a vehicle to keep food and drinks cool. Using a thermoelectric cooler requires preparation.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Check the temperature of the location where you plan to use the thermoelectric cooler. Thermoelectric coolers maintain an interior temperature about 40 degrees cooler than the outside air.

Passport trauma

I’m off to France on Tuesday. I’ve just started packing, and noticed that my passport has expired.

Yikes. In normal times, you would be able to pay 129.50 (an extra 52) for the “Premium One-Day Service”: book an interview at a Regional Passport Office with the Identity and Passport Service (0300 222 000, press 0 then 2). As long as your case is straightforward (as renewals usually are), you can collect the passport four hours later. But right now there are so many urgent cases that the waiting time for an appointment, even at a Regional Passport Office many miles from home, is five or six days.

A growth in the number of business travellers flying with Easyjet has contributed to a positive outlook for the year end.

The number of passengers travelling on business grew by 20% between April and June, compared to the same period last year.

Low cost carrier Easyjet saw total revenue grow to £935 million in the quarter, up 23% on Q3 2011.

The airline flew 17.3% more passengers during the period, although last year’s figures were impacted by the volcanic ash crisis.

The quarter’s performance prompted Carolyn McCall, Easyjet’s CEO, to predict pre-tax profit for the year ended 30 September 2011 of between £200 million and £230 million.

“The strong operational and commercial performance in the quarter reflects the continued successful implementation of the strategy we outlined last November,” she said.

The strategy included a bid to attract more business travellers to the airline, with the launch of the Easyjet flexifare.

“Against the backdrop of high fuel prices and an uncertain economic environment, the strength of easyJet’s trading demonstrates it is well placed to succeed,” said McCall.

Passenger revenue per seat grew 2.5% to £44, while ancillary revenues increased 17% per seat to £11.65.

Summer isnt always easy on us or our pets. Sometimes its just too hot or humid to do much outside. Our pets can overheat, we may be nursing a sunburn, and our cars feel like ovens when we get inside of them. Our pets are also exposed to different poisons during the spring and summer that they may not come across during the colder months. Plants and the fertilizers used to help them grow can be poisonous and cause problems such as kidney failure, vomiting, and other symptoms.

Some of the summer plants to be aware of:

Crocuses: There are two types of crocus plants, one that blooms in the spring and the other in the fall.
