British families planning to go abroad during the forthcoming school holidays could consider visiting Bulgaria, which was ranked by Post Office Travel Money as ‘this summer’s bargain buy’.

The company surveyed the price of beach extras such as jelly shoes, lilos and pedalo rides in various countries and found that the overall cost is half as much in Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach as in the Vendee region of France.

Spain’s Costa Blanca emerged as the cheapest place to buy a bucket and spade, while Turkey is ‘great value’ for an ice cream, according to the study.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, encouraged parents to show caution regarding beach extras for their children, as they could run the risk of blowing their holiday budget.

She added: ‘For families who haven’t already booked, it’s worth considering Bulgaria or a cheaper eurozone destination like Portugal or Spain.’

The research found that ice creams, sightseeing trips and fizzy drinks are among the items that parents most regularly fail to budget for.

Competition chiefs are expected to finally confirm tomorrow that airport operator BAA will have to sell two of its airports.

The ruling by the Competition Commission (CC) will end two years of hiatus since an original decision in 2009.

At that time the commission ruled that BAA would have to sell Gatwick and Stansted airports as well as either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport.

But there were then a series of legal challenges by BAA to the ruling, which ended with the CC findings being upheld.

The CC then considered whether there had been material changes in circumstances since the 2009 ruling.

In a provisional ruling in March this year, the commission said the sale of the airports was still fully justified and that passengers and airlines would still benefit from greater competition with the airports under separate ownership.

“I am probably more of a jacket person. You can mix and match and get more outfits when you travel,” the 65-year-old said. “I like small boutiques. Whenever my sister and I travel we stop at small boutiques.”

One of five children, McCurdy says her mother pulled her first name out of a newspaper.

She learned to
