Judging from experiences last year, the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) showed that 40 out of 100 recorded flight delays occurred in Newark, New Jersey. Out of these flights, Delta Air Lines owns the top spot for both of its departures from Newark to Atlanta scheduled at 5pm and 6:25pm. Air traffic congestion has been pinpointed as the culprit, with United Airlines suggesting that the FAA redesign the region’s airspace layout and upgrade its obsolete air traffic control system.

According to the BTS, there was an overall increase of 8.6% in late departures ending May year on year. Late arrivals recorded a rise of 9.6% during the same period. The overall percentage of flights arriving on time was the worst in the last three years at 76.6%. N

If you thought yesterdays earthquake was a big deal (shaking up a bunch of people who typically, dont get shaken up), Irene might have something to say about that.

Churning in the Caribbean, Hurricane Irene is getting ready to start strafing the Eastern Seaboard from Florida to New York City over the next week.

While the wise folks at the National Hurricane Center expect Irene to keep her distance and avoid actual landfall, this big hurricane could start causing plane delays at major airports from Miami to Newark because its high winds and rain will reach US shores. Coastal cities should expect some rough weather in the coming days as Irene glides along the coast.
